POET EMILY DICKENSON, “The Belle of Amherst”, IS A FRARY DESCENDANT

(excerpted from May, 2011 FFA Newsletter)

Famed poet Emily Dickinson (1830 – 1886), known as “The Belle of Amherst”,  is a direct descendant of John and Prudence Frary.  She is a member of the eighth generation of descent from John and Prudence.

John Herman Frary E1457 of Ukiah, CA, recently discovered this interesting fact.  Family members who have visited the Emily Dickenson Museum in Amherst, MA, probably already know about this;  Emily’s complete genealogy is given there, and the name Frary appears as one of her ancesters.  (The Newsletter goes on to list her generation-by-generation line.)

FFA TRIP THROUGH CALIFORNIA

By Lois Lehman, E1402d

A trip to learn about Frarys who have lived in California is in the works.  The plan is to start in San Francisco and travel by minivan to San Diego.  The adventure would start on Saturday, Sept. 10, and end Sunday, Sept. 18.

We will visit several Frary sites:  the gravesite of a Union soldier (Allen @. Frary) in a picturesque cemetery in Napa; a dining hall named after Lucien F. Frary at Pomona College, with the college historian telling us about Lucien, a gold mine once owned in partnership by A. P. Frary; and a stagecoach and house owned by Frank P. Frary, former mayor of San Diego.

Built into the trip is time to see San Francisco, Hearst Castle, perhaps whale watching, the Aquarium, and Cannery Row at Monterey Bay in San Diego.

Since we will be driving ourselves in a seven-passenger minivan, we can be somewhat flexible on our stops.  The cost per person for the trip will be about $1,100 per person for the hotel and cost of the rental vehicle and gas.  You would be on your own for any transportation to California, entrance fees, and meals.

If you would like to get acquainted with your living Frary cousins and learn about some of our California ancestors, please join us on this trip.

Please email me or call me by June 30.  My email is arizonalois@msn.com.  ….  A complete itinerary will be available soon by request.
